AI Overviews trigger on roughly 48% of tracked queries, up about 58% year-over-year, and now cover 200+ countries in 40+ languages. The trade-off for publishers is real: Ahrefs measured a 34.5% drop in position-1 CTR, and Pew found a 46.7% relative decline across 68,000 queries. There's an upside, though — brands actually cited inside an AI Overview see roughly 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited competitors on the same query.

Reddit and Wikipedia still dominate what every AI engine cites

Across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the other major AI engines, Reddit is the single most-cited domain, with roughly 40% aggregate citation signal, and Wikipedia alone accounts for 26–48% of ChatGPT's top-10 citations. LinkedIn rounds out the top five, especially for B2B and executive-focused queries. Schema markup gets an actual number behind the folklore

It's long been argued that schema.org markup helps AI search — now there's data: pages with proper schema markup have roughly a 2.5x higher chance of appearing in AI-generated answers, and sites with complete author/date/FAQ-tier markup see up to 40% more AI Overview appearances. Google itself says no special markup is required for AI Overviews — but schema still helps an LLM correctly identify what a page is about and who wrote it, which is a different claim than "required."

llms.txt hit version 2 — but AI crawlers still mostly ignore it

The llms.txt spec (a proposed plain-text summary file for AI tools) shipped v2 on August 10, 2026, and adoption among developer-tool sites is now over 50% — Stripe, Vercel, Cloudflare, and Anthropic all ship one. The catch: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended overwhelmingly skip the file and crawl your actual HTML instead, and Google's own May 2026 AI-search guidance says it isn't needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It's proving useful mainly for AI coding assistants reading API docs, not for AI search visibility.

Rolling out May 21–June 2, the update reinforced E-E-A-T as central to ranking and tightened detection of content produced with no meaningful human contribution. The clearest winners: first-hand, experience-led writing with a genuine point of view — original research, named-journalist reporting, hands-on product testing. Commodity listicles that compete purely on completeness lost ground. At the same I/O event, Google made AI Mode the default way many users experience Search at all.

Perplexity dropped Comet's paywall in March 2026, and the AI-native browser — with an in-page assistant, deep research, and agentic task automation — hit #3 overall on the US iOS App Store within 48 hours. INP is now a full equal-weight Core Web Vital — and 43% of sites still fail it

Google confirmed Interaction to Next Paint carries equal ranking weight to LCP and CLS after the March 2026 core update. As of the June 2026 CrUX release, only 55.9% of tracked origins pass all three Core Web Vitals, and INP (200ms target) remains the single most commonly failed metric. It's a reminder that AI-readiness and plain technical SEO aren't separate projects — a crawler (human, bot, or an LLM's own retrieval pipeline) still has to load and parse the page first.

Cloudflare is forcing AI companies to separate search bots from training bots

Starting September 15, 2026, Cloudflare blocks "mixed-use" AI crawlers by default on ad-monetized pages unless the crawler operator splits its search-indexing traffic from its AI-training/agent traffic. It's the next step after Cloudflare flipped from opt-out to opt-in blocking of AI crawlers in mid-2025, and it comes bundled with a pay-per-crawl licensing option — turning "allow or block" into a real commercial decision for publishers.
