INP joins LCP and CLS as equals
Interaction to Next Paint has been part of Core Web Vitals since March 2024, but Google confirmed after the March 2026 core update that it now carries genuinely equal ranking weight to LCP and CLS — not a secondary metric that matters less.
INP measures responsiveness: how long a page takes to visibly react after someone clicks, taps, or types, with a 200-millisecond target.
Most sites still fail it
The June 2026 CrUX release shows how far there still is to go: only 55.9% of tracked origins pass all three Core Web Vitals, and INP remains the single most commonly failed of the three.
A big, JavaScript-heavy interactive page can look fast on initial load (good LCP) while still feeling sluggish the moment someone actually tries to use it — and that gap is exactly what INP is designed to catch.
The AI-readiness connection
AI-readiness work and plain technical SEO aren't two separate projects competing for the same engineering time. Every crawler that touches your page — a human's browser, Googlebot, GPTBot, or an LLM's own retrieval pipeline — still has to load and parse it first.
A page that's slow or janky to render is a worse candidate for citation before any of the content-level AEO signals — schema, direct answers, clean structure — even get evaluated.
