What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

By Daniil Shastovsky·· 1 min read

What AEO actually optimizes for

Every AI answer engine runs roughly the same two-step process: retrieval (find candidate pages/passages for a query) and extraction (pull a specific answer out of the best candidate and decide whether it's trustworthy enough to state or cite). AEO is about winning both steps.

Winning retrieval means the page has to actually be about the question, in language close to how people ask it. Winning extraction means the answer has to sit somewhere clean and self-contained — not scattered across five paragraphs the model has to stitch together itself.

The concrete page-level changes

Put a direct, one-to-three-sentence answer immediately under the heading that asks the question, before any preamble or story. Models weight proximity heavily: the closer a clear answer sits to the question, the more confidently it gets lifted.

Back the answer with something verifiable — a specific number, a named source, a date — rather than a vague claim. Add matching schema.org markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Article with author/datePublished) so the same fact is machine-readable, not just human-readable.

AEO doesn't replace SEO — it adds a layer

None of this works if the fundamentals are broken: a page an AI crawler can't fetch, or that no one considers authoritative, isn't going to get cited regardless of how well the answer is phrased.

Think of AEO as the last mile on top of solid SEO — the difference between a page that ranks and gets read by a human, and a page that also gets lifted, verbatim or paraphrased, into someone else's AI-generated answer.
